surgical extracitons ce for general dentistsWhen it comes to continuing education, dentists need to be able to count on receiving three things as a result of their investing time and resources into their career.

  1. The dental CE course must be a good value and an economical use of their time away from production and provide value for their financial investment.
  2. The dental CE must be presented by expert, approachable instructors, provide credit acceptable to state boards, and be based on sound science.
  3. The skills and concepts covered in the dental CE must be immediately actionable, productive and profitable upon return to work.

Meet Your Continuing Dental Education Needs Now

One topic of continuing education that meets all of these requirements is mastery of surgical extractions.  The average general dentists makes 2-4 referrals per week to specialists for surgical extractions.  Learning to do these procedures efficiently, effectively and with minimization of complications, on-time and in-house is valuable.  Doing your own extractions not only helps dentists retain more production which is typically referred out, but also provides patients with increased satisfaction overall.  Patients want to have most (if not all) of their dental treatment done by their dentist.  Giving patients more of what they want and expect from their general dentist is an important part of patient retention.

Keep More Surgical Extractions In-House

General dentists who refer extractions out of the office do so for many reasons, and it’s completely OK to continue to do that.  Some dentists just don’t like extractions and other surgical procedures, and that is completely fine.  If you refer patients out for surgical extractions, but would prefer to do them yourself, then read on to find the top 3 courses that can equip you to reach that goal. Dentists who want to do more extractions can learn skills, techniques and protocols to help

  • Make surgical extractions more predictable and less complicated
  • Make surgical extractions efficient and less time consuming
  • Make surgical extractions safer by planning for, preventing and responding to complications effectively
  • Make surgical extractions a profitable part of their scope of practice

Top 3 Courses With High Impact for General Dentists

Surgical Extraction CE Step 1:

KCSI’s Continuum 1

is the best place to start for a strong basis in surgical extractions and related oral surgery procedures for general dentists.  This course includes 8 hours of online didactic preparation including case selection, advanced armamentarium review, surgical extractions and management of complications including sinus problems, bleeding, infection, nerve considerations and ridge preservation.

The live portion includes hands-on activities using lifelike models with a variety of procedures.  Procedures performed on the models includes molar, premolar and third molar extraction, extraction of multiple teeth, extractions near the sinus, broken roots, flaps and suturing, frenectomy and more.  KCSI believes in personal, individual access to instructors during and after the course.  Class size is limited to ensure access to instructors. During the live course, there will be discussion to enable participants to gain an in-depth understanding of the surgeon’s decisions at each step of the process.

Surgical Extraction CE Step 2:

Continuum 3:  Surgical Extractions Patient Treatment Course

KCSI’s Continuum 3, live patient treatment course immerses participants in 3 days of non-stop surgical extractions and related procedures.  The course is held in a modern, state of the art surgical facility and is limited to 6 participants.  The treatments performed during this course are dictated by the needs of each patient.  Patient participation is based on need and volunteers are drawn from the community as a form of community service/outreach.  Participants are divided into teams of two, and alternate as surgeon and assistant on each case.  Our instructors act as coaches for each case, providing guidance and instruction in real time.

Continuum 3 is one of the only, if not the only US based live patient treatment course available in the US.  Most patient treatment courses require international travel, but KCSI students enjoy receiving this educational experience domestically. Because we are treating patients in this course, KCSI does require Continuum 1 as a pre-requisite.  Comparable surgical instruction courses and/or clinical experience may be substituted for this prerequisite by review.

Surgical Extraction CE Step 3:

Feeling confident with surgical extractions and ready to take things to the next level?

KCSI’s Continuum 4, impacted third molar course focuses on both didactic and hands-on instruction to master impactions.  Dr. Dave Roberts hosts two evening webinars in advance of the hands-on course to prepare participants for important considerations such as appropriate case selection, protocols and techniques, prevention and response to complications and more.

The hands-on portion of the course is live online or live in person and includes surgical removal of 6 different types of impactions using lifelike models.  The hands-on portion also includes a live patient demonstration case to apply the protocols and techniques in real-life situations.  KCSI does require Continuum 1 as a pre-requisite.  Comparable surgical instruction courses and/or clinical experience may be substituted for this prerequisite by review.
